Department of Development

What is Development?

By definition, development refers to growth or advancement. The term "development" may indicate that a single event has occurred which alters a given situation in a beneficial manner. More commonly, though, development refers to a process or state of growth which positively affects a person or group of persons. When applied to an institution such as a school, development is defined as a focused effort to advance the mission of the institution.

Development at Sacred Heart School

The sole purpose of Development at Sacred Heart School is to assist and facilitate the carrying out of the established Mission Statement of the school.

We, at Sacred Heart School, nurture and educate each child to be lifelong learners who value the sanctity of life, and endeavor to grow in and defend the Catholic faith.  We strive to continue our rich heritage of religious and academic excellence in a Christ-filled environment, both now and for the future.

Existing to support the school’s mission, the Development Department must function on multiple levels. The school fundraisers fall under the definition of individual events which serve to provide benefit to the school as a result of the money raised. Fundraising has both short-term and long-term effects on the school’s ability to fulfill its mission. In addition to the financial contributions resulting from school fundraisers, long-term strengthening of the school community is also possible.

Less tangible, but equally important, is the role of development in helping to foster an environment that provides opportunity for the school’s mission to endure into the future. By concentrating on the extended family outside the school, the Development Department works to extend the Mission to the Parish, alumni, and surrounding community. In this case, “Development” is defined as creating and nurturing long-term relationships in order that the highest level of fulfillment of the school’s mission can be realized. It is a continual, long-term effort, which by definition, never ends.

In the early 1700’s, the founders of Conewago Chapel were blessed with the foresight to build their Church on a hill for all to see. Now, nearly three centuries later, we are called as a school community to “let our light shine.”

"You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hid. Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it gives light unto all that are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.”
